Frequently asked questions.

What is a Pitch Raise?

A pitch raise for a piano is a preliminary tuning process used when a piano is significantly out of tune…more than 5-10 cents flat below standard concert pitch (A440 Hz). It involves raising the overall pitch of the piano strings in a rough or approximate way before going back and doing a second fine tuning.

How often should I have my piano tuned?

About once or twice a each year. New pianos or recently restrung pianos will possibly need more frequent tunings as they settle.

Why do pianos go out of tune?

Most often a piano going out of tune is due to temperature and humidity changes. These changes in climate can affect the wooden soundboard and string tension. Pianos should also be tuned after being moved.

How long does a tuning take?

It depends on how far out of tune the piano is. If a pitch raise is needed, the tuning will take much longer. Different technicians work at different speeds as well so a tuning can take as little as 90 minutes or as long as 3 hours.

How much does a tuning cost?

This depends on if the piano needs a pitch raise or not along with the possibility of other work that needs to be done on the piano. Please click here to see our services page with prices listed.
